Raewyn McCausland

Raewyn McCausland has Ministry of Justice approval to act in Criminal Legal Aid proceedings. She also accepts private instructions.

In 2001, Raewyn completed her Bachelor of Laws degree at Otago University as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree and was admitted to the bar in 2002. She started her legal career as a prosecutor at the Ministry of Fisheries until 2006. She moved into criminal defence work with the Public Defence Service when it was in the pilot stage and has practiced exclusively in criminal defence since then. In 2009 she became an independent barrister practising from chambers.

Raewyn has experience in all aspects of criminal defence, including jury trials in both District Courts and the High Court. She is well known for her meticulous attention to detail and for scrutinising all aspects of the case brought against her client. This includes challenging the admissibility of prosecution evidence where appropriate.

Raewyn is a non-judgmental advocate for those facing serious allegations. Having worked within the New Zealand court system for over 18 years, she is proficient at representing those faced with serious charges with a high level of care. She defends clients facing all types of criminal charges with a focus on the needs of the clients. She aims to deliver better outcomes by considering all the circumstances that apply in each individual case.

No case is considered too big or too small by Raewyn. She understands that the consequences of conviction and sentencing for any client is important to them. Raewyn continues to take on driving cases, applications for limited licences and she has also had a successful track record for applications for discharge without conviction.

Raewyn is a member of The New Zealand Bar Association and the Criminal Bar Association.

Takara Boyce

Takara Boyce was admitted to the Bar in July 2025. She was employed as a law clerk for Raewyn McCausland in March 2024 while in her final year of her Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree. She is now a Junior Barrister employed by Raewyn McCausland.

 She has gained a valuable understanding of Criminal Court processes and file management through assisting with case management, drafting documents, legal research and liaising with courts and clients. Takara is eager to apply her education and experience to make a meaningful impact in the legal field.
